I would now dig out the size of the pot + 20cm on each side and fill it with good topsoil, or should it be even more?

Such a Japanese maple places considerable demands on the location and soil conditions with regard to moisture and pH value. With clayey soil, the addition of sand is recommended. Additionally, there is special soil that is optimally adjusted to the needs. It is definitely worth having such a bag to fill the planting hole.
