 Really? Oh man. I thought the natives grow like weeds, but no such luck.

Even cherry laurel needs its time. Our cherry laurel hedge is now 4 years old. A few plants are doing quite well, but a few lose the battle against winter and either get too little water or suffer frost damage in winter, causing the leaves to turn brown and the branches to die. These are cut back drastically in spring and will regrow. However, this is only somewhat beneficial for the overall appearance of a hedge. Last winter was the first one that didn't hit quite as hard. With a bit of goodwill, you could catch a glimpse of the beginnings of a future hedge after the spring cut.

Yeah, that takes time, when a plant is transplanted, it first has to take care of food - meaning it has to grow leaves but especially roots... and don't plant too much in the gaps, I'm always impatient there too, but bushes need space above and just as much underground.

Almost all plants are in their 4th year with us. Our cherry laurel was already ready for a hard pruning after 3 years; the few bushes are already head height in their 2nd year. However, I also do not buy tiny plants. They are all a smooth 1.20/1.50 meters tall when purchased. Our hornbeams are our problem child. I have been told they are supposed to explode this year. I'm curious.

Horn shavings are a long-term fertilizer; horn meal is finer and known for immediate use. It's best to mix both so that the bushes are optimally supplied.

I'm working on it this weekend as well; everything is already ready [emoji2]

Sorry, we are now in the 5th year. The copper beech in the third, the bushes in the third in the second picture.

that's how I wanted it too. I started smaller though. 120m of hedge also need to be paid for. there was only enough for 30 cm starting height.
