I feel the same way too, no one is exempt from that. I think it's good that you say it like that. If we all took a little more of that on board, things could become more peaceful again. The little racist inside me also speaks up from time to time. Maybe we then overdo the topics in the other direction in some areas and fall into the opposite extreme, but when it comes to xenophobia, there are no two sides. A craftsman recently told me that on the other side of the Elbe, they have a different culture, even though they belong to the same municipality. You don't necessarily have to be a foreigner; here the Elbe alone with its 200 meters of distance is enough. Anyone who has been to Belfast or Derry knows that already one street without a fence can be a life-threatening border. I did not recognize it at first; only when affected people showed me the many small, insidious details did the extent become clear to me.

It's not about defending everyday racism (which, by the way, I tend to notice more in my parents' generation). However, I found the reactions to an alleged quote quite severe.

Is there a limit to how one should react to racist remarks? I believe not. My intention is by no means to balance things out or retaliate, but with my strongly chosen words I try to make clear how painful it can be for those affected.

Here in Saxony there is no difference; I rather feel it is fueled by the younger generation.
I just want to make it clear how quickly one can hurt other people with casual remarks. In that sense, I absolutely understand your topic about Brandenburg and you have probably read something from me on that!
I am a so-called "Wessi" and would not let it go unchallenged if someone said something against "Ossis" in general or East Germany, not least because my wife is from Dresden. At the same time, craftsmen come into my house and are treated very kindly, but from whom I constantly hear things like "Wessi," etc. For them, it is a kind of general excuse for everything that goes wrong in their lives.
Most recently this happened on my own terrace, when my brother-in-law told a story in which, of course, the Wessi was too stupid for everything. After a few days of stomach upset, it became clear to me that I had heard this repeatedly and that the next time I will ask clearly and openly how he means it. I think he even likes me somewhat and does not realize that it affects me when someone says such things even in my own house. He does not mean me directly, yet he means me; I would never think of speaking so badly about Ossis, especially not in the house of an "Ossi." It is partly deeply embedded in the language usage, which I find highly harmful.
So if you asked someone affected, I think they would find my reaction rather appropriate. Personally, I would prefer not to have to read something like that at all.

I also read it with surprise and just thought, why is he moving there then, is he a Berliner or from Goslar  ? After the construction, he'll surely discover Brandenburg and complain when he moves away again :)
