Yes, you have to register a business for that. In doing so, you waive the small business regulation. This allows you to get the paid value-added tax (input tax) refunded by the tax office. However, you must also subject the income from this to VAT. Since the photovoltaic system then counts as business assets, you must also tax the own consumption as business income (use withdrawal). In this case, the corresponding filing deadlines for mandatory assessment apply.

There must be a reason why almost everyone claims the VAT refund ;). You also have business expenses that you can claim. The own use can be stated at a flat rate of 20 cents. If it were a losing business for private individuals in the long term, it would have become known a long time ago and hardly anyone would register as a business anymore.

I downloaded the article from the magazine Finanztest: "Mit Solarstrom Steuern sparen". Everything is described very well. I am now considering adding a battery after all.
