I would keep the inner pattern geometric and, if necessary, make the "frame" wider at recesses.

So basically like this? I somehow think it looks weird. Because unfortunately the projection protrudes inward, not outward.

No, not like that, but make the frame equally wide on all sides. Although it also depends on the furnishing. If there are almost furniture everywhere where the oddly thick frame is in the sketch, that would be a different matter again.

You only have the one offset because of the stairs?

In the end, you'll be standing there with the tiler, he'll lay the tiles test-wise, and then you'll know.

Diagonal is also pretty cool … ;-D

It is important to me that the inner filling remains evenly rectangular, so no recesses are visible there. Therefore, I would also make the frame wider everywhere, and it will then have this protrusion in one place. I believe this is how described it.

Withdrawn, had misunderstood the problem. Is the staircase open between the steps or a masonry staircase with covered steps? (sorry if that was already explained)

The staircase is a concrete staircase with covered steps. I don't know right now if we have enough uniform tiles to make the frame twice as thick throughout the entire area. I would have to check.
