Massive planks are sometimes even cheaper than parquet because only one layer is processed, whereas parquet often has 3 layers. We decided on spruce planks since we have some visible spruce beams. They haven’t arrived yet, but I hope it will be great. Did a test layout with wood leftovers... From what I’ve seen: Often the "Select" grades are the calmer ones. "Rustic" then the lively ones.

When I hear Tut Tuts, I immediately think of your former neighbor. (My father-in-law always turned them all off) How is it without them?
Pro parquet. Our parquet is lacquered and the quality is extremely poor. Therefore, it already had slight "damage" after a few weeks because the wood naturally dulls in some places, scratches very quickly (the lacquer), and in some spots it is a bit sensitive and swells quickly. This bothered us a lot at the beginning, and we were sure that after 5 years it would be sanded down or even replaced. After the first damages and the disappointment, it turned out to be quite robust after all. We have solid wood parquet in a not-so-modern format. Because of that, it was relatively inexpensive.
However, I would only take oiled parquet from now on. We were recommended lacquered because it is supposed to be more durable. With kids, that's not a mistake. However, as mentioned, the parquet installer (a local company with (specialist) staff) did not work very carefully. Unfortunately, with lacquer, you cannot just oil it yourself, but have to sand it down and oil it anew.

Room-length schlossdielen made of oak are the most expensive planks. Only hand-laid, inlaid parquet is more expensive ;) Maybe only topped by cast floors with 24k gold inlay and gemstone decor.
And yes, tomato sauce disappears quickly. For mopping, you use a cleaning agent that already contains a care additive, so the oil film is not washed away. We have two boys, a dog, both work full-time, and are not cleaning fiends. Around the dining table it’s sometimes questionable. But it doesn't bother the plank floor (made of pine) much. On the contrary, you see dirt and dust! later than on plastic floors. Those tend to be electrostatic and literally attract dust and hair. Spruce would be a bit too soft for me personally in the living area. But I would take oak any time.

Oh, in winter we have washable, woven runners in the walking areas of the living room and entrance, which my family from Sweden regularly brings me. They help keep grit, gravel, and mud quite well under control despite having a dog and children. When the kids have to quickly go to the toilet wearing mud pants and rubber boots, they only register the SHOES OFF! rule when it's already too late.

Exactly, that's how we thought about it too. Someone suggested in this thread to put a door/partition there. That might be worth considering. But usually, guests behave. And if not, then they can admire our cowboy pin-up portrait in the bedroom. ;)

No, we have air conditioning. So, no problem in that regard. Generally, parquet is not quite ideal with underfloor heating, but that’s slow anyway. I assume many people in the forum have parquet with underfloor heating—what are their experiences?
Does it just take longer to get warm, or do you really lose energy?

The concerns are mostly my husband’s. He said that if he had to decide alone, he would definitely rule out parquet. But he also thinks there’s not much difference. I think he has seen very little beautiful parquet so far.
I used to live in an old building with 3-meter-high ceilings and massive wooden floorboards. It was really cozy.

Funny enough, we were recently in a Michelin-starred restaurant to celebrate our anniversary, and they had a beautiful wooden floor. And of course, it didn’t look newly laid. It had a patina, but I found that charming. I always compare it to leather handbags. They seem to get more beautiful every year.

Our builder also suggested that you could do that. There are tiles where you can put a kind of "border" to visually separate it again. I’ve seen some nice examples (and much to my great annoyance, didn’t save them).

Much better. ^^
The overall living situation here is extremely second-rate. Old house, not insulated, neglected for many years, the basement is still full of old junk, so I hope we can still extract our stuff from there. But it is quiet here. :)
Except when it’s the fair, but that’s only once a year. ;)
Let’s hope it will be similar in the new development where we’re building. But the neighbor on the left has his carport space facing our direction, and the neighbors on the right told us yesterday they plan to build a 6-meter double garage on our boundary. So we really can’t complain about that. :) Although I wonder how their plot width and a 3-meter boundary distance will still leave room for a house, but I’m sure they’ve thought that through. :D

That’s good to hear. In the past, we sometimes didn’t wipe up what our small child dripped immediately because there were more urgent little ailments, and when you find it the next day, it’s sometimes nicely dried even on vinyl, depending on the components. You can’t really scrape on parquet, and soaking seems difficult, too? How do you get rid of such mishaps from the previous day?

That’s why I say: it’s all in your head. But there must be people who can switch off the fact that it’s tiles and then allow themselves to indulge in the imitation of the decor. They also perceive laminate as "parquet." Sometimes I envy neurotypicals ;-)
