In the previous house, I also had regular patio doors. We now have 3 lift-and-slide doors in the living/dining room. Two of them are 2.5m each and one is 3m. For me, that was the best investment in the house and I would do it the same way again.

Fun fact: Officially, I have a 5m lift-and-slide system listed in my construction service description. :D But that was a copy-paste error that accidentally ended up in the document, and neither the builder nor we noticed it – even though I should have noticed it because I know I don’t have a 5m wide window. Lol.

There are actually anti-drumming mats for that. We have them everywhere upstairs and we don’t hear anything when it rains. But we also have a 40-50cm roof overhang. So it might be that not so many drops fall on it at all.

Yeah ok, I can’t rule out that there are really smooth-running variants. I just want to point out: in an exhibition, there might not be triple-glazed safety glass panes installed. Just in terms of weight, a 2.5m x 2.3m element probably weighs almost 200kg (I had 1m x 2.3m at 70kg). So it can’t be that light even with super ball bearings, or if it is light, it’s at the same time a danger to the body parts that sometimes get caught in between.

That has nothing to do with sliding windows but simply means in double sashes that there is no post between the sashes but the sashes interlock. The fixed sash is normally closed and has a special bolt. When you open that, you can also open the sash. This second one can then not be tilted. But in this way, you can get a 2m wide opening with normal sashes for a fraction of the price of an HS door. You can still have a panorama with fixed elements next to it.

Whether they are generally always louder, I don’t know. There are special strips that are glued underneath to dampen the noises. Whether it wasn’t done properly with us or if I’m especially sensitive, no idea. It bothered me during heavier rain anyway, always this plop plop … then I focus on it and then it’s over for me. I only wrote this because you’re also sensitive to noises, if I remember correctly. Edit: Because mentioned the roof overhang: we didn’t have one. It also wasn’t with every rain and always, sometimes it just dripped down from somewhere up above, the individual drops and the dull noise, I felt like climbing the walls.

A lift-and-slide door is of course great because it doesn’t take up any space in the room. But the extra cost was simply way too much for me. A double-wing door without a central post is significantly cheaper and also provides a large opening. I have also experienced various tricky sliding doors and was therefore less willing to spend money. With children, I would also consider whether the heavy sliding elements are really necessary. A 20-kilo child finds them much harder to open than an adult.

We definitely still have a regular swing door right next to it. For the 3m wide system, it has to be some form of sliding door. In the old house, we had a normal double-wing door. It annoyed me that when it was open, it always came so close to the table/chairs. We had it at the head of the table back then, and eventually the high chair for the child was there, which often collided with the porch door.
