You do have a slope. Where are the steep spots, where the flat ones, and where those with a moderate incline? What have you planned for slope stabilization? Once that's done, you can always sow a flower meadow in case of doubt and just let it develop for the time being. As for the beams... that will probably depend heavily on the exact incline you want to compensate for and how the beams are anchored in the ground. I wouldn’t calculate less than €200/sqm just for the material for a retaining wall.

I tried to photograph this and insert it into the sketch. The dashed line separates the flat area from the slope (currently).
Behind the house it is leveled between 4-8m, behind that it drops off quite steeply. You can’t really see this well in the photos. It’s definitely too steep to go down safely on foot. We received quite a lot of excavated soil from the house distributed on the property, since hauling it away under current conditions would have been very expensive. Therefore, our general contractor hid it "on the property" as well as he could. How it will look in the end when backfilling around the house is done remains to be seen. But it won’t get less steep behind the house.

I’m confused about how it feels in reality compared to our sketch. I measured today how far the leveling goes and entered it to scale into my sketch. According to the sketch, the slope toward the property boundary would be twice as wide in places as the flat area. But it doesn’t look like that at all in reality. Of course, it could be deceptive. I’ll take a proper tape measure next week and measure again.

Phew, from the picture, that is quite a lot steeper than with us. I'm afraid you won't get by without retaining walls or L-shaped stones. Plant stones could

Phew, that’s significantly steeper than with us. If the terrace is to remain stable, I would recommend a retaining wall or L-shaped stones. And you will need stairs to the lower garden area. Doesn't your neighbor do that too, or am I misinterpreting the background? With such a steep slope, the terrain planning should be integrated directly into the construction planning; actually, your L-shaped stones should already be in place...

I really like such a slope. A staircase made of granite stones going down. And the rest laid out as a rock garden, or with several planting tiers.

That's already quite a lot. When you measure it properly, also make sure to get height measurements. It does make a difference whether you have to cover 2m or 4m.

He only did it on the side; he hasn't retained the slope (i.e., behind his house) with it, or not yet. The last time we talked, they were still unsure about what to do regarding the outdoor area.

We spoke with our general contractor about the slope issue before construction started. We had actually explicitly decided together against such L-shaped concrete blocks. Instead, we have so far created the terrain in two terraces. That has held up for a year without affecting the neighbor. I definitely want to stabilize and plant it a bit, but I intended to frame the terracing rather than going at it with those big concrete heavy hitters. Our general contractor has always advised us very well so far. I would be surprised if he had fooled us about the terrain now.
