Exactly, solid planks made of soft coniferous wood (pine, spruce) are quite inexpensive. The floors can be made more durable if you order them brushed or brush them yourself. This way the soft wood is basically brushed away and the harder annual rings remain. At least that's how it was explained to me by our flooring supplier.

The distinction between select and rustic is also correct. I like lively floors, so the somewhat cheaper rustic suits me.

For the upper floor, we decided on somewhat more expensive ash planks. They are almost as hard as oak, but (ahem) not as ugly :D I just don't like oak at all.

We haven't installed them yet. But for me, they are the nicest wooden floors so far. They are brushed and oiled, 20mm thick, 13cm wide and between 50 and 200 cm long:

Oh, and we paid 82 € per sqm, just for the wood. Considerably more than we wanted, but well. On the other hand, these things last forever. I checked recently, and just a few weeks later they already cost 110 €.

If I had underfloor heating, I would probably have gone with tiles on the ground floor despite my love for wood. I love my spray mop and absolutely hate mopping by hand, but it doesn't work on the floorboards... On the other hand, you're not supposed to mop them often anyway, so maybe it's not that bad.

As inspiration: From what you can see in pictures and videos, Nadja Granduc (jagrashome or something like that on Insta) has beautiful wood-look tiles laid in a herringbone pattern. I think it looks really great in her place.

Luckily, they are not lying around yet. Although I could look them up if the weather continues like this. These are those patchwork rugs made from strips of fabric. Nowadays, they are available not only in wildly mixed colors but also more monochromatic. My mother always buys them when they are on sale because they are used absolutely everywhere in Sweden. You can put them in the washing machine and even wash them at 60 degrees. We even had them on the terrace when the children were still toddlers.

At the moment you still have some time and are obviously seriously considering the question... Therefore, I can only recommend that you get a few samples from the supplier or order some online. Then do a practical test yourself. Throw anything on it, leave water or ketchup standing on it... on the surface and/or in the joints. After 24 hours, wipe it off and be amazed at your pro or con findings.

Also keep in mind that wood/parquet can almost invisibly be repaired with relatively little effort.

Off topic: Are you allowed to say here or by private mail which vacuum mop you use (is an "s" missing here)? We also wanted to buy one, but no model really convinced us. We have read the various, including reputable, test sites. Until we "possibly eventually" decide on a model, we vacuum/mop the traditional way.
