So tiles, yes, I would have chosen different tiles back then on my own. More like the ones in your picture. My husband is more conservative in that regard. What if you choose different furniture, different decorations, then it won’t fit? Can you still see that in a few years? With those, you’ll be complaining every time you clean and, at the latest, after a year you’ll be cleaning the grout with a toothbrush (those were some uneven tiles that still looked very much handmade from around 1820). The consultant also steered strongly towards a neutral direction back then. Simply to be flexible, to change the style.

It would be too wild for me and I wouldn’t use too many different tiles and coverings either, otherwise it ends up looking fragmented. For the tiles, we have a set in gneiss look, with the dark ones in the kitchen and utility room, the lighter ones in the hallway and bathrooms as floors, and the white ones as wall tiles in the bathroom. That way everything is uniform and yet not the same. The only transition between floor tiles is from the hallway to the utility room, but the door is usually closed there anyway.

I think the trick is not to look at too many. The easiest cutoff is the price. Then describe the style without looking at all the tiles yourself. The salespeople know their range better than you anyway (at least they should). And then just have the courage to decide quickly ;)

That's a good tip, we did something similar with the first house. Back then, we only had the selection from our construction company's standard options. And where others would complain about a lack of choice, I was grateful for the pre-selection. That's where we discovered "our bathroom" and just said "that's the one we'll take." This time we have more options and more confusion. The agony of choice is real.

Only men can do that;)
Or you have to know clearly in advance what you want, and that must also be available.
Unfortunately, you can't change tiles as quickly as parquet or similar.

Do you have a supplier for the specific tile? I once searched for similar tiles and then had to realize that they either only come in a used look or there are no matching border tiles or they cost >200 €/sqm or they come from the UK and the customs make the prices explode. That’s the [Pinterest Problem], you see something beautiful and then have to realize that you can’t get it directly in Germany.

My girlfriend could do that too. Our samples were all decided quickly - except for the floor issues. And you don't just change parquet that easily either. Besides the price, it should be glued in place with underfloor heating.
