It is your house after all, so it should also be your rules. I would never even think about finding reasons why shoes need to be taken off at my place.. But with us, it is exactly like the part quoted below.. I never had to tell someone to take off their shoes. Even craftsmen ask if they should take them off, and I always give them shoe covers then.

It's not just about hygiene. None of the guests will clean up afterward if the dirt is spread all over the house. And apart from that... I don't want the dirt on the new parquet floor either.

What kind of shoe covers do you have there? I should get some too. Upstairs we have a light carpet, so craftsmen also have to take off their shoes. But depending on the job, that’s not always possible (keyword safety shoes) or maybe some are not prepared for it and feel uncomfortable (keyword smelly feet after a long workday). Shoe covers would be a great option there.

You speak from my soul.

There are such plastic covers with elastic bands, we bought them for house viewings in the old house as well. But most people also took off their shoes without being asked. Just search for "shoe covers" in the shop of your choice.

Shoes inside the house are absolutely not allowed here. We even wipe the dog's paws before entering. The exception: visits from craftsmen. You usually have to clean afterwards anyway. We also have shoe covers for laboratory visitors, and I’m the unlucky one as the health and safety officer who has to order them and therefore knows more about these things than I could have ever dreamed.

The very simple, cheap covers are extremely slippery and are not approved for use in a professional context for safety reasons. The slip-resistant ones are expensive. So we clean.

Conclusion: you have to die one death.

We had that once too. At some point a new chimney sweep came along, or rather it was a woman, and she said she would rather go on the roof than sweep over openings in the cellar like her colleagues before her. But I didn’t feel like her walking over the wooden stairs, over the parquet on the upper floor into the attic, and there over the light carpet. She didn’t want to take off her shoes because they were safety shoes. I gave her the choice: either she takes them off, walks like her colleagues over the tiles in the cellar and may exceptionally keep the shoes on there, or she leaves without doing anything and I call her boss. She chose "shoes off," but on subsequent visits she always wore shoe covers in the cellar (though with my neighbors she went without).
