There are large sinks, e.g. Etagon from Blanco, where you can then place a draining rack inside the sink and have everything together.

We also don't have a drip edge on our granite countertop, that was a great decision, it also looks much better and you put everything away right away.

Best regards

Why no drip tray? I actually need it again and again. Sometimes to quickly rinse a cutting board that doesn’t go in the dishwasher, sometimes knives that don’t belong in the dishwasher. Also sometimes larger salad washing bowls that only take up space in the dishwasher for really dirty dishes. And at celebrations, the champagne glasses that have to be washed by hand.

The distance from the stove to the sink is not any longer for us either. I like it that way. I can put down a hot pot there to, for example, drain pasta water, and I also love the small basin in between us. We chose the Franco sink with a small basin to the right of the large basin. A used spatula might end up there, which I might need again right away and don’t want to put in the dishwasher immediately.

I find this solution much better than maybe dripping from the island to the sink. Not to mention that the stove with us is often used for quick frying. I don’t need an island with grease splatters in all directions. I like the island for preparations.

It's probably a matter of taste.

These are not arguments for a fixed draining area. Quickly rinsed -> the sink is enough for that. Since there is a lack of workspace here, I would also immediately dry and put away freshly rinsed items (because I need the space for other things). Large bowls or pots -> same, I don’t leave that stuff lying around. Fine glasses -> if needed, I place a dish towel underneath; otherwise, I have free space for versatile use and not designated as a draining area. Hot pots -> if you don’t have a stone or ceramic countertop, you have a trivet that you put away when not needed and then have free space again. And nobody said that sink and stove have to be separated. I would ALWAYS want a sink near the stove. Possibly a small prep sink near the stove and the main sink elsewhere. But that is not the topic here. Stove on the island was not the topic either. Although from experience I can say: if planned well, nothing gets splattered. We have the cooktop on the island (because otherwise it would have been in front of the window and I didn’t want splashes on the glass) and nothing splashes, even with quick frying (which we even do without a pan because we have a teppanyaki grill). However, our island is quite large – and has a sink directly by the cooktop. But here I wouldn’t want the cooktop on the island either.

I might have forgotten to mention that my husband cooks differently than I do
I also always try to clean up and rinse everything while cooking, but it works better if I don’t have to dry everything or put it away half-wet. So the things are gladly allowed to stand in the draining rack on the drip tray.
When my husband cooks, it looks completely different here. Great cook, but infinitely chaotic. I’m so glad we have extra racks in the sink. And with him, there’s always heat and splashing when he’s frying steak.

Well, I guess everyone has to decide for themselves what’s important to them and what’s less so. I just wanted to mention that I don’t consider the kitchen a design failure.

Some people think there is right and wrong with kitchens. No, there are different needs and thus different concepts. In combination, however, more and less sensible kitchen concepts can arise. This should then be checked by someone with experience.
