Without mode: the cork dries out, and when opening the bottle it crumbles. That is quite disgusting! However, “corky” might also be the wrong term. Whatever: drink!

No, it does not. Inside the bottle there is constantly a humid climate, the cork does not dry out even with the bottle standing. That is a long outdated myth.
