Whether you spend a lot or a little on design, whether the furniture is stylish or not – who sets the value? Why does it have to be expensive design, whether second hand or new?
Sure, of course that also applies to a kitchen, right? It’s also about quality with furniture, which is just as reflected in the price as with kitchens, and eventually design (or frou-frou) starts to drive the price—that’s the same for kitchens, furniture, clothing, and whatever else. The question is also what you understand by “design” and I must say that I very much like looking at beautiful things, a visible brand name is less important to me, I don’t really have many visitors to impress anyway.
The resident feels comfortable with and according to their own standards, but many downgrade things if it’s not a “Benz” or the lamp brand that apparently has to hang in every household, it’s hyped that much.
Downgrading something is generally lame, because everyone can live however they want. On the other hand, I also don’t think it’s quite “fair” when, for example, a Rolf Benz sofa is dismissed as frou-frou but the sharp Bora cooktop is described as a necessary basic feature (exaggerating a bit). As I said, I can understand both, including my acquaintance who drives a €100,000 car but doesn’t want to spend money on living. It doesn’t bother me and he apparently feels comfortable with it – good!
You probably mean people who buy things (kitchen, lamp or sofa…) to show off. You don’t need a sofa for that, it already starts outside the house, with clothing, holidays, choice of school, or the musical instrument for the kids… kitchens and sofas are no exception there.
I personally enjoy every item in the house, like to look at them, but just as @pagoni2020 apparently does (at least that’s how I understood it), collecting design brands can also become quite cluttered or exhausting in a room… house.
Either I described that incorrectly or it was misunderstood. Due to some twists in life and various living places, I have packed my possessions a few times into 5 moving boxes. If needed, I could do it again tomorrow and detach myself from things. I collect exactly nothing, not even design pieces, branded things, or souvenir junk from abroad.
Over time, we have simply, in my opinion, acquired really beautiful and high-quality handcrafted pieces of furniture this way, that will outlive us and that we will never tire of. I usually didn’t even know the brands, I often have to look them up if one is mentioned.
Because my house was involuntarily rented out as a vacation home for years, a new piece was needed more often. For myself, however, I have always preferred rather sparse furnishing; cluttered windowsills or overfilled drawers drive me crazy.
My secret: I like empty cabinets and drawers and for 30 years in my own house I virtually had nothing stored in the large attic, I wouldn’t even have anything to put up there.
