We had also once planned to close it and then feared it would look too bulky. We like it this way.

What would be meant seriously? The real reason for pantries is the storage of sensitive foods: potatoes, tomatoes, lemons.

nope. For something like that I have three big drawers in the fridge. They are called Bio-Fresh or Vita-Fresh or something like that. We have all sorts of things in the pantry: kitchen appliances you don't need daily, vases, tools, canned food, wrapping paper, etc. Basically everything except fresh food
