Ah ok, cultural differences ;) Here, people chop next to the sink to rinse things off now and then. So I spend significantly less time at the stove than next to the sink.

I spend significantly (significantly!) more time chopping next to the cooking pot and stirring or frying than at the sink – so that was the only logical decision. The island also had to be deep enough to prevent anything from happening at the back. 1.20m should be enough, I hope.

It's the same with us! I would do it that way again and again, although if I had the option of a huge island, I would integrate everything there. But usually you don't have that...

With us, the cooking surface is also on the peninsula. However, it is relatively large with a second sink. I find it ideal that way. What doesn’t work are the mini islands that have just enough space on the left and right to place a wooden spoon. has counter space next to the cooking surface. I also always chop next to the stove, and that way you have a view into the room.

I still wonder why in Germany everyone installs the stove in the kitchen island and not – as I know it from home – the sink.

Additionally to the other feedback, in this case not all the (dirty) dishes accumulate on the island, but rather further away on the kitchen counter behind it.

Also, the island is occasionally used for a "buffet setup," which again is not so nice if there is still a sink (with all the associated stuff) placed in between.

So the island area remains "cleaner" and is more inviting for working together with friends/guests in a sociable way!?

You probably mean the children's play kitchen, that doesn't count, or the terrace outdoor grill station?
