At the time, we decided on an open wooden cladding with boards of varying widths. Originally, we also considered larch, rhombus, and other ideas, but then we came across a carpenter who we think is extremely pragmatic and price-conscious in our interest, and he implemented our ideas in an affordable and stylish way. Vertical, 14cm wide, differently cut (14/10/7/4) spruce boards, 24mm thick, were used for about €12 per sqm (shouldn't be significantly more expensive today). Underneath, we had wood fiber insulation and black (possibly even blue + red) foil for this purpose. After some time, we still really like it, although next time I would choose planed boards because applying the gray-aging stain on the unplaned boards was really tough. Additionally, since we are near a farm and a lot of greenery, spider webs tend to gather on the unplaned wood fibers. Overall, it turned out to be a very affordable, stylish solution and it also offers the option to remove, cut, or otherwise manipulate a board at any time if needed. Basically, you can do it yourself well, but unfortunately that wasn't possible for us for various reasons.
