So, I looked around again and also googled, and different opinions are sometimes simply a side effect of different bases:
"Woodgrain" is a surface style about which no general statement can be made because it can be produced in several ways; consequently, the feelings when looking at it partly only apply to one of the types of producing this surface.
As I have seen several times and perceive as cheap-looking, it is presumably an embossed surface made of plastic.
Such a structure would be difficult to emboss in sheet metal, then you probably have smooth sheet metal and textured foil.
Sandblasting would also be conceivable. And just as there are currently few (but only bad) examples around in my area, in another area there might mostly be good ones.
You probably cannot clearly recommend for or against it – objectively not, because as mentioned, different materials can be behind "woodgrain," and subjectively not because of the well-known variety of tastes.
When I say that mine would not be pleased, that is after all not a standard. By the way, the initial question was not "who has the philosopher’s stone," but "What kind of surface do you have on the garage door?". Sheet metal, baked enamel
