I can also confirm this from years of experience. Phyllostachys also does not cause problems if you install a proper root barrier. Fargesias only have the disadvantage that they may bloom and then unfortunately die.

I have been following the bamboo discussion for quite some time now. And then I rather accidentally saw a video on YouTube that is likely very insightful. Because we also have a garden pond, I occasionally watch the videos of the KonishiKoiFarm. In video #4760, starting at minute 4:20, bamboo is the topic ...

Unfortunately not insightful at all, because they talk about bamboo as if there were only one type...

O.K., I admit, this is not a scientific treatise on the subterranean expansion of different bamboo species. But at least we learn: root barriers can be overcome. :)

...and...

Clumps also grow thick, so the diameter multiplies over the years.
A few weeks ago, I also posted my fat Fargesia here, and some other Fargesia varieties now have a diameter (ground height) of about 60-80 cm.
Fargesia has the advantage that it only forms clumps – the others have rhizomes that come out one, two, or three meters further away.

That's exactly where I want to go. ;)

The hedge is supposed to become dense like reeds, meaning that eventually no individual plants will be recognizable because they merge into each other.
We set the ditch about 60cm away from the wall and made it about 80cm wide. The center of the clump is therefore about 1.20m away from the wall.
The planting distance is about 90cm.

The flowering of "my" variety is only expected in 70 to 80 years, so if anyone has to worry about the variety dying out, it will be my grandchild. :)
