Privet is great, we didn't notice any flies and why root barrier? I've never heard of that before. It also blooms really nicely if you don't keep cutting it down constantly.

Thank you for the feedback. I had already given it some thought and the following advantages come to me through Liguster: - relatively narrow to keep as a hedge - relatively low water requirement - useful for birds - inexpensive - evergreen (wintergreen) My decision was actually made. Only my mother-in-law made me check/reconsider this again. I had read somewhere (don't remember where) that Liguster can form runners.

A maintenance-free garden does not exist either. Even these stone deserts will be reclaimed by nature, unless Roundup is regularly poured on them. There is always something. Privet meets the typical requirements for a hedge quite well.

But it is care-poor, although that is also relative

Privet must be trimmed twice a year if the hedge is to remain narrow and dense. This may be somewhat more labor-intensive than a naturally growing flowering hedge.

Best regards

After much consideration, we also planted privet as a hedge in spring, without a root barrier.

I could not observe any flies that I could somehow assign to the hedge, but countless butterflies during the bloom.
The neighbors' hornbeam has many small white flies at certain times.

Every third plant already has individual shoots 1 meter long upwards (which I absolutely must cut). This gives hope that we will have some privacy screening in 2-3 years.

Another alternative similar to boxwood: Japanese holly.
