We used to share garden tools in our townhouse community. Lawn mowers, scarifiers, shredders. It worked great.

I understand the desire for something of your own – because nowadays it’s unfortunately really the case that things that don’t belong to you are handled carelessly, and when they’re broken, no one feels responsible. So no thanks...

What’s wrong with electric then? I find petrol exaggerated, loud, and annoying. Electric mows well, right? Or don’t you like dragging a cable around with you... well then... go for the spindle. Can’t you borrow one from somewhere to test it out?

With us, the manual reel mower from Brill works quite well. The grass just must not be too long or wet. That means mowing twice a week in summer, but then it goes quickly and easily. And a reel mower only mows forward.

Not every household has to own every device.
For us, it's called a "Siedlerverein" with 180 households as members. The annual membership fee is €15.
On the homepage, you can see where one of the approximately 100 devices is ready for pickup and what is charged for usage. Once a year, the invoice comes by email, or you take it home at the annual general meeting with a shared snack. About half of the members attend.

Wood splitters, chainsaws, electric window cleaners, mattress deep cleaners, motor sickles, scaffolding, car trailers, chippers, seed drills, large pincers, saws, fruit presses, large electric mulled wine kettles, hedge trimmers, soil cultivators, hand plows, scarifiers, leaf vacuums or blowers, circular saws, small excavators, lifting platforms and many other items that the men can enjoy can be rented by the day or hour.
There is also a good lawnmower, but it is rarely borrowed because almost every household wants their own (see Karsten).
Oil and pellets are also ordered together due to price advantages.
It works quite well (email or phone call and a note if something is broken) and despite repairs, there is enough money left for new purchases, bus trips (about 60 people) for the annual excursion, etc.
Greetings from an area where "at 7 a.m. the world is still alright."
