- Newly sown lawn must always be kept moist. Surface watering is sufficient here. For example, 5 minutes every hour.
- Established lawn should be watered thoroughly 2-3 times a week. Best in the early morning hours. The soil is cold and does not evaporate so quickly. Watering in the evening is bad because moisture promotes fungal growth and diseases.
If you take it to the extreme (e.g., golf courses), the dew is brushed off in the morning.
Watering can also be done during the day. Lawn does not “burn” from watering. It somehow withstands it… the only disadvantage is that a large part evaporates and does not reach the roots.
“Burning” affects large-leaved plants. Not lawn.
Exceptions are various types of lawns and very sandy soil. Here daily watering may be useful.
Thank you for the extensive help. I think it already looks a bit denser today.
We will then switch watering to the morning. Someone told me morning is bad because the water evaporates quickly then. But just from a gut feeling, morning also made more sense to me.
I looked again, so at the bare spots in the photo there are already shoots, just few. I’ll see if it gets denser and if not, we will sow again in autumn.
