Well, I had googled and it said frost-proof foundation at the bottom and also frost-proof gravel to be compacted on the slope. That sounded like a bit too much work to me!

Hm the joints of the walls around our beds are also open joints. But there is a deep layer of gravel underneath. I am pretty sure that there is no cement slurry in there.

Probably also depends on the substructure/ground. The up to 3 meter high old retaining wall has no foundation. It would have been common in the past, as the ground is rocky.
