Allegedly someone a few villages away has one too.

Why? I have never completely cleared the driveway. Neither at the new nor the old house. Sidewalk and maybe the parking space or spots where cars have problems.

I don’t live in the mountains, but I know snow and ice. Thin layers are removed with salt. When there is more, sand is spread on the cleared surface.

Sand does not help with snow, it helps with ice.
Volcanic ash is really good, nothing slips anymore. Due to the lack of volcanoes, unfortunately, it is not available here.

We had that when we lived in Budapest for a few years and I’ve also thought about it, but here it snows too rarely for it to be worth it. Energy efficiency is another matter entirely.

A decent snow shovel would be alright, the cheap thing we took over from the in-laws is simply useless. Does anyone have experience with those shovels with wheels? Are they any good?

Heating is extremely expensive. I considered both electric and the house heating system. Defrosting once costs between €500-700. Every janitorial service or device purchase plus maintenance is cheaper.
