I see it a bit differently. Due to the shortage of craftsmen and their desire for quick money, they take on more jobs than they can actually handle. So they botch the work and cash in, even if they might be able to do better. Most of them don't even need recommendations. The customer is just happy if anyone shows up at all. If then there's also no knowledge involved, it’s a complete mess. I recently put out a tender for painting work. One guy actually showed up on the construction site, stood in front of the newly tiled wall, and asked if that should be painted too.

I would rather interpret that as "particularly thorough" and "thinking ahead." Tiles can certainly be painted, and some clients might actually decide at short notice that they prefer a different color or wallpaper etc. instead of the tiles on some walls. With us, it is actually the case that we do not know exactly whether we have chosen and arranged the tiles optimally and whether we might not prefer to replace them with a textured wallpaper/wallpaper wall. My imagination is enormously limited in these matters. It is not out of the question that we might remove and replace the tiles on one wall or tile another wall ourselves.

True to the motto "Is this art, or can it be thrown away?" :D SCNR

Or the processes are controlled in such a way that errors are eliminated in advance. Keyword FMEA. I have been involved with FMEA in our company for two years and we haven't even uncovered 20% of the possible sources of error. But that will never be implementable in craftsmanship.

Congratulations that there is finally light at the end of the tunnel.

I can also confirm this from my experience. It starts with heating engineers and continues through many other trades. When I see 2 cm tile strips on one side of the room and full tiles on the other side in new buildings among acquaintances, it makes my toenails curl. When the window installer told me there were problems with my requested triple-glazed windows, I laughed inwardly. When I hear excuses and justifications at car workshops, I walk backwards out again. These are often things that I, as an absolutely craft-unfamiliar person, have taught myself. And three to three and a half years of training plus master school and appropriate further training are not enough? Sorry, my motto by now is: if he could learn that, then I can too. Of course, there are still things that I do not do myself for various reasons. But most of it I do. And the hourly wages of 80-100€ that I would have to pay, I do not reach. From that point of view, I also save effectively. I am happy to take twice the time, but for that without botching.

Whereas I have something similar with my tiles as well. But that is actually due to the uneven screed. Theoretically, we should have used leveling compound first, but I had no time and no money (at least that's what I thought at the time). In hindsight, many things could have been done differently.
