This intermediate size is actually very unusual for us. Why is that, actually?

Presumably as a result of considering fall heights and the pursuit of equality between upper and ground floors.

So I really can’t understand at all why someone would place the sofa in front of a floor-to-ceiling window, especially when it’s the "main window" facing the garden. And then always look towards the wall with the ugly black hole (=TV) instead of looking out into the garden. Unless someone is an absolute TV junkie and constantly watching. But hopefully that’s the exception in families with kids. When we watch TV, we always lie comfortably in the corner of our sofa and from there have a perfect view of the TV. When we talk, we have the optimal view of the (evening-lit) garden and the fireplace. I also like to have my morning coffee on the sofa while looking at the trees. Simply beautiful.

As a suggestion, here is a possible layout for corner sofa, TV and fireplace.

Basically a good idea. But the TV would actually be at quite an awkward angle for me. And I also wouldn’t want one sofa section standing in the room; I actually like it when you can always see each other between the dining table and sofa, no matter where you sit. And you can place the fireplace like that in a city villa, but in our house with a pitched roof it had to be on the interior wall. So to have a direct view of it, the sofa has to be opposite it. And well, I don’t know if I would want to look directly outside like that and expose myself to the neighbors. I don’t know if I’d constantly be thinking about how I behave. Especially in the evenings. So I’d rather go for the option in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, where at least you still have some shielding thanks to the backrest.

Fall protection on the upper floor is certainly necessary. On the ground floor, probably not. In older houses, you often see parapet heights of 40-60 cm. There were then small elongated radiators in front of them.

We have 65 cm in all "viewing" windows and otherwise 45 cm (= seating window) or 125 cm (= sightline). Our building authority is probably outstandingly cooperative and nice... in any case, the fall protections are neither particularly conspicuous visually nor financially:

In the ground floor or above terraces/balconies as well as with fixed glazing, it is not a problem anyway.
