We also have an 8m slope over about 26m, and have merely terraced the garden. It wasn't even that expensive. Of course, you lose area, have plenty of embankments, and the rest is not necessarily flat either. If the property, location, view justify it, it would not be a reason for me to exclude it.

terracing is the magic word. I have a book at home called "Der neue große Gartenplaner" by Peter Wirth, there are really great examples of how to make a hillside garden beautiful. But of course, it's not cheap, with various retaining walls and stairs. Alternatively, I can also take a walk to a house around here that has filled in a lot, it looks terrible.

I don't know how well you can see it. But the street going up there is pretty steep, certainly well over 20%. No idea how they manage to get up there in winter, after this house it gets a bit steeper again ;) And the house is definitely 5m above the lower cross street. Next to it there's also another 1.5m by the carport. By the way, the front door is under the carport, I wonder if that's really smart in heavy rain?
