What, that he either heats very expensively or not at all when gas or electricity is gone? But he can then be happy that in 10 years he might be able to heat with hydrogen.

The whole blackout thing is such hysteria. There won't be any blackouts. At least not because of gas shortages. Hacker attacks would be more critical.

And if the electricity is announced to be switched off for 2 hours in a district... so what?

Well, I don't know what a green engineer is supposed to be... A "normal" engineer, as long as he has more in his head than just flexing with his title, first informs himself about the topology and material properties of the existing gas networks. At the latest then, he becomes knowledgeable about buzzwords like "hydrogen embrittlement" of metallic welds and about the gas transmission properties of PE and PEX materials and can then estimate whether and when he will actually be able to operate his "H2-ready" gas boiler with H2. There will be no spoilers here.

Hello,

Last year there were some articles about this in the VDI Nachrichten. A 10-20% admixture of H2 seems achievable; for that, only a few components at central points of the gas network need to be revised. Most pipelines can probably handle that for now. For 100% H2, you would more or less have to replace the entire gas pipeline network. That will not happen.

Best regards,

Andreas

And that's why it is probably more sensible to start with Power-to-Gas. There is enough H in methane for the "Grünen Ortsverband" to give their approval, right?

Greenwashed hydrogen is by no means green :D (but at most blue)

That is the order of magnitude mainly "promoted" by the network operators to keep their product alive. However, at the distribution level, it will probably end at single-digit blending rates. If necessary, one wants/will then come around with methanation.
