You mustn't unpack everything in the temporary house... I've stored a lot while we're living in the temporary solution and I'm already thinking about decluttering box by box when moving in, I don't miss anything. We had already really given away, sold, and thrown away a lot beforehand...

All's well that ends well :) Where do you see the difference there?

A construction contractor explained it to me like this: Split-level means you only have the "entrance landing" at street level, then go up half a flight of stairs to the rooms, and go down half a flight of stairs to the living area. He said single-story offset is when you enter at street level and basically go straight ahead into the rooms, and then go down a (full) flight of stairs to the living rooms/kitchen, etc. At least that's how we would do it. Of course, it can also be the other way around, but since the garden lies lower than street level, it makes sense to place the living areas downstairs.

So without knowing the exact definition, Split-Level basically means that you have "several" levels that are not offset by whole floors. Level 1 would be, for example, the ground floor, and Level 2 is then half a story (or even less) higher, Level 3 likewise, and so on. Single-story offset to me would be a house that can basically be "pushed together" like a normal house. So it basically has the normal floors, they just aren't built directly above/below each other.

Oh, okay. So far, I have only seen sample house plans from the other construction company with split-level. The person who explained the offset concept to me hasn’t sent anything visual yet. I have to admit that as someone from the north, I still can’t quite imagine it. Our houses are mostly without basements, without offsets or splits or anything like that. My parents’ house is built into a slope. You enter the front door at the bottom, and when you walk inside to the upper floor, you can go out to the garden again through the veranda door. The rear part of the ground floor or basement (whatever you want to call it) is basically built into the slope, has no windows, just these shafts. I imagine it being similar with our property, just exactly the other way around. The street is the highest point; the garden side is lower.

So we are also building on a slope - you enter the house on the north side (street side), then go down a staircase and then out to the garden on the south side. But that's normal when you build a house on a slope. That this is called "single-story staggered" is new to me. For us, it's just a plain ordinary house :D
