Yes, but glued together. ;) The steps are milled from block material, which seemed more appropriate to us, even though the stringers appear correspondingly monolithic.

With my staircase builder, saddling was also more expensive than mortising for a string staircase with risers. I could not see a real difference, except that the stringer is then basically lower, and I chose mortising without asking about the background.

Yes, totally. I didn’t expect it at all, but I was all the more happy about it. So, in the conversation, it was said that the saddled variant would cost us about 2000 euros extra and that there would be no difference whether it was mortised or saddled. With this information, we then went to the next sample selections, for which we had set a total limit of 15,000. Unfortunately, the offer only came after all the other sample selections were done, and suddenly it was 3,500 for the mortised and almost 5,000 for the saddled variant.
For us, it was a combination. But the price is really amazing :oops:
We had offers for: stock wood painted white as mortised stringer with risers vs. glued wood for saddled staircase (with the glued wood, you can still see the structures through the color; with a mortised stringer, we wouldn’t have wanted that, with the saddled stringer we don’t care since our staircase is closed and it’s in the pantry underneath, so we don’t mind).
Also extra cost for the saddled variant with the somewhat less valuable wood - 500€

Standard wood bleached as a mortised stringer with risers vs. glued wood for a saddle staircase (with the glued wood you can still see the grain through the color, with a mortised stringer we wouldn’t have wanted that, with the saddle stringer it doesn’t matter to us because our staircase is closed and it doesn’t matter to us since the pantry is underneath).
Also an additional charge for the saddle variant with the somewhat less valuable wood - 500€
We have oak wood, which still needs to be treated to match the floor. Also, I wanted flush risers, which probably changes something as well (?).
I found the price overall quite steep, but floor and staircase were at the top of our priority list, so we accepted it.
