Presumably you made a typo there; according to the offer, it was not the mortised but the saddled version that was more expensive. According to the building specifications, it would have been a "finger-jointed beech wood staircase"; please don't ask me exactly what the difference is.

No.

That's exactly why I am so surprised: mortised is actually more complex (all other things being equal, i.e. both with or both without risers) and would logically be more expensive accordingly. The journeyman can manage saddled without a master.

Don’t ask me where the snag was. We probably fooled ourselves, but I don’t care. I was happy. :D

With us, the saddled variant also demanded a significantly higher price at the time. Upon inquiry, this was then attributed to the considerable additional material effort (two solid load-bearing beams that are milled from a solid piece).

Higher price compared to what?

I consider laminated veneer lumber equally suitable as solid wood.

Well, if all the steps are already made of solid wood, the stringers should match as well. The surcharge was in relation to a variant that was mortised on both sides (in wooden stringers).
