What did you indulge in at the house, what did you give up?

Also a nice reminder!

I really don’t see the stairs as negatively as it might have come across. I would just do it differently now if I had the chance.

Back to the topic again!

What else we treated ourselves to:
- Such a kitchen island in the open kitchen
- No kitchen table, since the "dining room" is directly adjacent to the kitchen.

Greetings, torsan

Complete renovation of a 1962 old building

What we treated ourselves to:
- Everything out and new
- New insulated roof with many skylights
- New floor-to-ceiling windows
- New condensing oil heating system
- Walls removed to create a more open feeling of space
- Kitchen island
- Lift-and-slide door
- Aluminium front door
- Asymmetrical corner bathtub
- 2 large floor-to-ceiling showers
- Double washbasin
- New open bolt staircase in oiled oak
- Network and TV connections everywhere
- Plenty of power outlets

What we had to do without for now because no money left but will be retrofitted later:
- Roller shutters (can be retrofitted)
- Stove
- Double carport
- Garden redesign
- New terrace

What we decided against:
- Facade insulation

Hello , exciting, an old building renovation. So you already have a nicely overgrown property? Great. But I probably wouldn't have dared. Isn't an old building renovation much harder to plan, especially regarding the costs?

Now I know one more thing that we are treating ourselves to - the design of the outdoor facilities in the first year including everything we need (hedge, fence because of our blind dog, terrace, driveway, path, garden shed, lawn, planting). All of this with as little personal effort as possible.

: Oh yes, that is really treating yourself. At least that’s the point that, like many others, we can’t manage directly. By now, I would really long for that. Building a house was/is already so much self-research, fundamental decisions, running around, stress... How wonderful it would be if professionals could help you expertly with the garden and then present it "finished" (a garden does live, after all). And then finally having arrived, just maintaining and enjoying the whole thing.

Yes, it is definitely harder to plan because surprises often await in old buildings. And you also have to make compromises. But if everything goes smoothly, it's only 10 percent additional costs. But there is also a lot of own work in the house. Today the screed is being poured. oh yes, completely forgotten. We now also have underfloor heating throughout the house. That was a must for us.
