I would shorten the hallway and only partially separate it with a short freestanding wall (for example, exactly where the passage between the dining room/living room is now or in front of the basement stairs).
Phew... You just caused quite a mess in my brain. Could you visualize that? I don't quite understand yet.

? Hallway shortened up to the stairs -> stairs included in the open space. Wall panel about 1 meter wide somewhere, as a design element or as a screen in front of the basement stairs.... it can't be that confusing
