I agree with you, there is no really strong connection. But there is a slight one, since you naturally have much higher demands for a staircase in the living area (at least in the case I know) than for a staircase in the hallway niche.

The biggest problem with the modern living hypes for classically living people is the lack of floor space. There is a kitchen zone with an island. One wall houses the staircase. Another is glazed, the remaining number four holds the TV with a lowboard.....in our living room, however, there is a Vertigo with glass doors and the good Holmgaard glasses, another buffet with doors and drawers. In addition, a not quite tiny Ikea Valje shelf with CDs in felt baskets and books, plus a media shelf with Yamaha stereo set and the TV on top. Also, a six-person oak natural dining table, a corner sofa, and in front of it a late 60s original teak table with anthracite slate top. It is certainly a bit crossover, but cozy and laden with memories. A modern all-purpose room would be impossible for us to furnish. Karsten

Sorry, the furniture you mention would each have its place in our all-purpose room. And when I write that, I really mean: each piece of furniture would have its own separate wall. The dining table naturally stands in the room without a wall. And in addition, our all-purpose room has separate walls for an L-shaped kitchen with a cooking island. What is explicitly added: 4 separate terrace doors, 2 each 1 meter wide, 2 each 2 meters wide, so a total of 6 meters of terrace exit. And what can I say: there is still a staircase going up here, and there is space for a fireplace. And I can objectively say that probably no one who has been inside here would have to say that it is cluttered, rather cool and sparse.

Most staircases I read about here are neither the extreme "designer object" nor the extreme "rickety ladder, leftover," but one of the many in between. And they are by no means placed somewhere other than in premium couch-view panoramic locations just out of shame for their ugliness.

But isn't that exactly what Karsten meant? There's nothing against sparse furnishing, that's a matter of taste. But if you want lavish furnishing (yes, I belong to that group too) then as many walls as possible with as few floor-to-ceiling windows as possible are more suitable.

Karsten means, as I understand it, that hardly any functional furniture should be placed in an open-plan room.

I disagree with that: I know Karsten's floor plan and can say that all that his heart desires would have plenty of airy space with us. And much more.
is mistaken...
I am of the opinion anyway that based on his current statements, they would have been very happy if they had oriented themselves towards something "modern": the open living comes from the beloved childhood of his wife: large kitchen with oversized dining table: space for family and spontaneous visits from neighbors, plus access to the potatoes in the garden. Good living room as well. It can happen - that's just how it is now
