At our place, for various reasons, it actually looks pretty much a mess (untidy and dirty) most of the time

That's terrible! I cook almost every day, I like cooking, I like eating... and during the last third of the preparation I wipe surfaces, wash dishes... that comes naturally.
Pan-fried dishes are only served in restaurants. When guests come, a lot is prepared and oven food is served. There's no chaos, no dirt?!? The rest goes into the sink, and that's at the edge...

It's not my fault, I do it exactly like you. But not everyone can work and keep things tidy at the same time. My beloved wife cooks really amazingly, but it only takes one move and it looks like a war zone... Oh God, I hope she never reads this. Anyway, in the separate kitchen it's not a big problem, it can look messy there and still be comfortable in the living room.

Honestly?!? I don't understand this kitchen-living room discussion. For us, it will be a really big open space with a living room angled at 90°, that's the point that annoys us the most in our current living situation, guests are there and one or two constantly have to hide in the kitchen and hardly get anything of what's going on. Yes, when cooking is happening, there will definitely be used dishes lying around.....So what??? Who cares about that? What kind of fears/compulsions are those that I can't sit at the dining table and see used dishes in the kitchen without having a crisis? It's my used dishes! And when guests are here, it doesn't matter anyway, after all, you cooked together or for each other! What problems do you have that it's so important to make a perfect impression in front of guests? I don't have to please anyone, it's my life! And if a guest has eaten with us and then says "well, there were used dishes in the kitchen all evening.......but the food was tasty" then that was simply the last time they ate with us.....

... is no different in an open-plan kitchen: the big pot is on the stove, everyone takes some, food is eaten... you feel comfortable in the community. Whoever wants to wash up is not alone, and whoever wants to nibble from the pot later is allowed to do so
And no one thinks of dirt and stink when it comes to togetherness

Exactly! That's how we see it too, and there is no argument against openly integrating the kitchen into the other living spaces. Except in situations in the countryside / farmhouse like in [Caidori], where it is usually the rule to build this way and is completely understandable.
