Quite simple: if he hadn't built over, there would now be space for proper soundproofing. Then he wouldn't hear your children's drums either! Seriously: if you are already so accommodating and tolerate both the 3cm and also pay for the soundproofing completely yourself, although the neighbor could be involved, he shouldn't get so full of himself. Otherwise, refer to your approved planning.

The first encounter at the construction site went wrong, but that does not mean there is a bad neighborhood or that things will just continue like this. First, I let people scream until the end. No one can manage that for longer than 5 minutes. Then there is a pause, and I let that have some effect as well. Then I offer something, a place to sit, something to drink, whatever is available. As long as someone is so emotional, there is no need to speak factually anyway. Only when some calm has settled in do I address the matter. Something like this: I believe we want the same thing – a good noise protection. And we also don’t want to pay for any contribution to it. Can we continue from this point?

The wonderful thing about choleric people is that they scream out all their anger at once and thus get rid of it. They become accessible again and are rarely really unpleasant people.

Sounds like you handled the situation well. With a bit of skill, it will work out.

It lasts longer than 5 minutes you don’t know my ex-boss. He was inaccessible for hours. Usually, an orderly retreat (loud or quiet) was best, either voluntarily or because you got kicked out, and then wait until he comes.

Try it as suggested by Hampshire. Some male specimens behave towards women like *zensiert*. The only thing that helps is to stay factual and firm. Don’t show if you’re trembling inside. That’s when they really strike out.

Your word in God’s ear
What does “handled well” mean? I was so stunned that he was immediately at 180. I stood there like a mummy.
We agreed at home that we will keep our feet still for now.
We might contact a lawyer for a talk.
But that would be the absolute last resort.
The construction manager will ring his door in the next days.
At our request, however, to approach the matter de-escalating.
Without threatening the building extension.
Maybe that will help.

Let him.

No, you better don’t do that. A lawyer wants to earn money, he does that by writing letters. What should he write in there that you can’t just wait out?

It can be that simple

You are too good for this world
Basically, you fit well together. A pot and lid. Choleric and The Mummy

That is your joker.

Always stay calm. As Hampshire advises. Offer a cookie. But don’t get smug. It will work out. If you ever get around to bringing the craftsmen a cake, ring the bell and introduce yourself, offer them a piece of cake. Just act as if the day of noise never happened...
