I don't quite understand this yet. At least, the ridge of the barn does not run above the apartment; attached is a section and floor plan. The dimensions are not quite correct there because the outer wall has not yet been drawn recessed inward. Just so much: the apartment or the north wall of the apartment is still in front of the ridge of the barn, which only reaches its roof peak further north. But maybe I am now missing your point...

An office is not necessary on the upper floor. Only the bathroom unfortunately must have a window somehow and therefore reach the south side. I always thought we could easily fit three children's rooms and a bathroom there. With a different staircase, I once thought of something like this (see preview image), although I was still thinking of an office or similar...

I wish you a nice weekend & of course I would be very happy to receive more input.

Ah... yes.., ok. I was always a bit confused. Ok, then you have space up north at the top. But that's secondary for the stairs and living area since a) the stairs would move too far back (north in the house) b) no window can be realized there. We don't want to make the hallway on the ground floor fancy but rather create nice, livable, spacious living areas on the ground floor. That means: move the stairs forward.

All clear (with regard to the last post).

A short addendum regarding the attic. Dormers are conceivable – I myself could well imagine a shed dormer across the entire south side, so that all rooms benefit from it – although I cannot yet estimate the costs for it.

Have a nice weekend and I wish you plenty of sunshine!

If I look at the section, then you can make a shed dormer up to the knee wall. The upper edge is at 2.8 m. The rafters are then laid on the partition walls. But is that enough to bear the additional loads of the roof conversion for living space? A structural engineer definitely needs to be involved here. The shed dormer will certainly help to make the roof viable. You have the bedroom downstairs, so you can reduce one room on the upper floor. Then the rooms are wider and you don’t need the depth. Then the hallway with stairs can move to the south. The stairs across are not a good solution. Should the interior construction be solid? KS stone? Concrete ceiling? I like the idea of the skylight in front of the knee wall. I would also recommend that above the hallway on the upper floor. Such a conversion won’t be cheap.

Reading deeper into it is too time-consuming for me right now, but I want to wish you and everyone good luck and am happy that there are always such projects that use old stock to create beautiful living space. I find that alone valuable and enriching for everyone :)

There are three children's rooms plus a guest room/office. The rooms upstairs are not that narrow and long - the left one reaches 2.99, and if you actually raise the knee wall to a reasonable height, the room shortens and no longer feels so long. The support beams can remain visible from the ground floor. I now have a daylight bathroom, daylight bedroom on the ground floor. I have a huge room at the back free as a utility room... I am now going to enlarge the living room a bit, enlarge the pantry (under the stairs), and try to get daylight into the guest WC as well. It's going well :)
