It would be kind of pointless if you save amount X through your own efforts but then lose the subsidy and in the end it basically comes out the same

No, it depends not only on purchasing proper materials but also on installing them correctly. Professionals can do this better in many cases. I was surprised anyway that EL was subsidized in the past.
