Then make it a bit bigger and put a sofa in. You're creating problems where there are none.

And why should I make such makeshift compromises when I’m paying a few hundred thousand for the house?

A good solution is
[*]closed living room ... pure living room [*]dining/cooking area .. spacious [*]possibly study/guest room
all on the ground floor. Then you have 3 areas that can be wonderfully used separately. Of course, also children's rooms and parents' bedroom. A basement room ... would be a worse solution for me as a cozy room.

Why is a separate living room and a kitchen/dining area and/or an office/TV/man cave a compromise?

Basement, so that it doesn’t look like a party basement from the 80s, costs money.

He wants a basement. Party basement. That's how it is. It's his house, his money. Karsten

Hi, of course I don’t want to interfere, in the end it’s your decision and assessment of how much space you need / will need. But I would at least consider whether your cellar room can meet the requirements for coziness. I’m not saying it can’t work, but what will the cellar room look like? Plastered walls, underfloor heating, wooden floor...? We have also planned a "hobby" or guest room in our cellar. It will get a light well, to get at least some light in and a reasonably nice view outside. In addition, it will be normally plastered, have a ceiling height of 2.50 m, and get parquet flooring. But my wife and I quite agree that we will rather retreat to the bedroom to watch TV. The cellar room will probably be used more for guests to sleep, for training, or as an office, none of which are usage scenarios that require a lot of coziness. It’s just a cellar, in the worst case still with a light shaft – which can be quite practical for a home cinema, however. It’s just meant as a food for thought. You’ll manage it! And about the beer: as a former Lower Saxon living in Franconia, I have to admit unfortunately that the beer culture in Franconia is indeed more diverse than in the north, although a Flens or LüPi sometimes offers a nice bitter change. And a Köm or Aquavit even more so, but hardly anyone down here understands that. : However, the idea that beer makes you fat belongs to the realm of myths; in fact, you consume more calories with your schnaps than with a Seidla.
