Is a satellite system still necessary in new buildings, or is IPTV sufficient?

No RF system (whether Sat or terrestrial) can also mean poor reception. DVB-T can easily be fed into the Sat system, as well as FM and DAB+, i.e. radio broadcasting. In our house, we have such high attenuation through the walls that WLAN connections simply drop and DAB+ is only poorly receivable. With cable connections, you don’t have these problems if the antennas are installed outdoors. Furthermore, there are also converters from DVB-S2 to IP, but they still cost significantly more than a good LNC. In my opinion, the solution would be much simpler: Next to the multiswitch with two Unicable and several legacy outputs in the antenna box, lay one or two Cat6A cables, and if you want to be very generous, also lay a fiber optic strand to possibly retrofit a suitable server later. Streaming has latency of easily 30 seconds – many thanks also if your neighbor cheers at the next World Cup and you have to wait forever to find out why.

Unicable is a standard that makes it possible to access all transponders of one or multiple satellites on a single coaxial cable. The receiver "tells" the Unicable converter which transponder should be remodulated to a single frequency. Normally, about a quarter of what a satellite broadcasts is completely fed onto the coaxial cable because it is technically not reasonable to "push" the entire spectrum of over 3 GHz through one cable. With Unicable, it is only a very small section of it. This provides more space for other things on the cable. There is also a newer standard called JESS. Such a solution is inexpensive for multi-family houses and when using so-called twin receivers if only one cable is available. On one you can watch your program while the other records.

Google: Standard EN50607

I only recently stumbled upon it because our general contractor's cable guy messed up and I didn't want to miss out on the advantages of our twin receivers. Otherwise, I would never have come across films like "God bless america", "Iron Sky" or "Oblivion".

Streaming hasn't convinced me yet, especially since I dislike the interest-driven bubble that inevitably forms around it. On the one hand, the picture quality is often poor and on the other hand, the data streams also like to drop out sometimes. Just great when you want to watch something exciting.

I am in favor of satellite systems, but nowadays you really don't need to feed FM and DAB+ into them anymore. There are many radio stations that can be received via satellite in good quality, and additionally there is internet radio. If your WLAN is too poor for that, then it is due to insufficient installation on your part. FM and DAB+ are, for me, only relevant in mobile contexts like in the car.
