Is a satellite system still necessary in new buildings, or is IPTV sufficient?

Don't you also have to differentiate with IPTV? Sometimes it seems to me that IPTV is equated by some with streaming and co. When I talk about IPTV, I mean regular TV. ARD, ZDF, pro7 and co... Recording, time-shifted viewing, pausing, replay within a limited time frame. 50+ (mostly uninteresting) channels in HD, above that countless but even more uninteresting ones in SD. We pay nearly 60€ for two receivers, a 100/40mbit connection, and the above-mentioned services. I think that's fair. And it is super comfortable. Netflix and co are all available on the receivers. No additional device for anything. OK, Disney+ currently only works via the Apple TV. I admit, we have been using this for about 10 years now. But it is so comfortable, the quality is excellent. I would never want to have anything else again.

Disney+ is accessed normally through the Disney+ app on the (Android) TV device. The same question came up for us. We hardly ever use the regular TV. We watch exclusively through Amazon, Netflix, and Disney+ But we didn’t want to give up SAT altogether. Especially since relocating SAT later would be complicated again. So the electrician installs the SAT system (including grounding) right away. Cost approximately 800€.

But the question of the thread can only be discussed if you assume normal TV, right? I mean, what do you need sat for if not for normal TV? The thread topic is not "Do we still need normal TV at all?" but rather "Do you still need sat for normal TV?"

Question to the group. Sat>IP. Who has actually implemented it and is not just a theoretical expert? Which server (e.g., Kathrein) or which receiver (e.g., SelfSat Dongle) have you used? I will implement three satellite connections (as part of the renovation of a two-family house), but later will never run a line to the roof again. So a LAN cable will be laid to the multiswitch to be prepared for any eventuality.

Yes, that's how I see it too.

SAT for normal TV Internet for streaming (here normal TV via IPTV would also be possible)

For us, the reasons for SAT were: 1. Reliability (Internet rarely fails as well, but when it does, you're glad to have TV over SAT) 2. For IPTV you still have to somehow "adjust". Magenta box etc. And then you're again additionally dependent on that provider.

SAT in addition is actually a luxury (for us). And could theoretically be replaced.

The parents, on the other hand, only have SAT so far; for them IPTV and streaming is still a book with seven seals.

I have already done this for customers, there was once a converter from Fuba directly to Powerlan, and at the other end Powerlan and a Panasonic connected; at that time it was the only one besides Loewe that could do that. But that was a few years ago. So Sat to IP.

But as I said, I would only use it as an emergency solution, because with UHD at the latest, there will be quite a high data load on the network.
