What does commuting actually mean when I read Düsseldorf here or Berlin from my own environment. There, people drive 40 minutes within the city from their rental apartment to work, and then the office suddenly moves out of the hipster district with ridiculously expensive rents into a commercial park functional building, and suddenly there is an 80-minute commute in the same city.

I also see this with my brother-in-law. He lives in a big city, works in the same city and needs 90 minutes for the commute between work and office. When I think about where I can get to in 90 minutes from a small town via highway. Hanau, Frankfurt Airport, Erlangen, Eisenach, Kassel, a mix of car - ICE even up to Göttingen. Except that most of those who work here in Frankfurt, Kassel etc. are weekend commuters.

I currently have 63 km one way ([Gießen nach HU]) and need 35 minutes for it. Some colleagues with shorter commutes take significantly longer. After the house is built, it will even be a bit more. I don't even mind that, even though I work part-time.

It's not just about the time. 63times2times5times240 days equals 151,000 km per year. That's not for free! A house in HU, whatever HU is, should be a bit more expensive and it's still worth it. Karsten
