I like the design very much. Once you understand the living space three-dimensionally, you will realize that there will not be the feeling of a long room, because the width in the airspace has an effect – after all, there is a gallery balcony over more than 2/3 of the length. The structure on the ground floor enables a sense of coziness to be created in a very large room. The air volume will help to prevent any claustrophobic feeling of "stuffy-ness."
Tips - (unfortunately not only about saving):

[*]Think about an acoustic ceiling – sound comfort is not a luxury – you don’t want a hard echo! LignoTrend works excellently for us – you can also see pictures from .
[*]Reducing storage space works wonderfully with some discipline and can be a real relief. If you don’t yet live "minimalistically," put together what really needs to go into the house. When we moved, we left at least 70% of our possessions behind and haven’t regretted it for a second nearly a year later. The limited storage space helps us think more consciously about new purchases.
[*]A utility room is often warmer than the rest of the house due to the waste heat from the equipment housed there, and thus less suitable for storing supplies. Consider a separate small pantry behind the door from the kitchen and placing the entrance to the utility room through the cloakroom – and if it’s a "stealth mode" door like, for example, from Linvisible (unfortunately not cheap) or a mirror door.
[*]While you’re at it, you can also cool the pantry from the utility room somewhat… and redesign the window… (symmetry from the outside is overrated – it’s not worth sacrificing function for it, and asymmetrical looks can often be excellently combined with the exterior design)
[*]Assuming you enjoy bathing often and for a long time – how attractive would the lake view be? That would have an impact on the closet/entrance arrangement to the bathroom. I would get creative again there. First idea: swap bathroom and bedroom, bedroom exit to the gallery hallway – with a walkway, a half-round, or a kind of "indoor balcony"...
[*]Stairs from the bedroom to the garden

And indulge yourselves in the generosity of the gallery! It also has a positive effect when you are downstairs. We have something similar and I know what I’m talking about.

    [*]

Thinking outside the box, niches expand the space.

Unfortunately, we only have a niche in the living area, not in the kitchen. The living area feels much more harmonious to me.

I would like to make it more "crazy." Unfortunately, they say we should also think a bit about the supposedly approaching age if we, the elderly, don't want to go to a nursing home right away. Otherwise, the first floor with an unobstructed lake view would be my number 1 choice! You are really right about that. We’re just trying to incorporate some pragmatism so that we can live there as long as possible and don’t have to move out at the first sign of illness. Hence also the option to swap the living room/bedroom each with a full bathroom. Alternatively, we also had in mind to move the living room to the gallery and design a living-dining-relaxation area downstairs. That would also create more space again because of the fireplace etc. Good food for thought...

The structural engineer, who will be working on it soon, will tell us about supporting the roof among other things. The current plan comes from the general contractor and their planning program. Therefore, it should somehow be possible. Maybe there needs to be a post on the gallery... but as I said, these things are still open. The idea about the kitchen door is a good one, so far we are planning with our almost new kitchen here, though it might stay here too... Since we would build modularly again anyway, we will find a solution, but I will take a look or maybe will send it to me. Expansion into the utility room sounds interesting, I had also thought about extending the living room into the dining area but then the dining area would have to be raised. I understand what you mean, so it’s not just a straight corridor. Currently, I don’t know exactly how much space we need for the utility room/technical room, although I’m also thinking about relocating some parts to the garage if possible.

Also, many thanks to all of you for the ideas, keep them coming! Nothing is decided yet here.

Just wanted to add to my post, but couldn’t anymore.

Take a look at the „“real“ Bauhaus people. They worked a lot with niches. For that, they held back on the materials.

Here is an older picture - we also had to support a purlin and used a part from an oak tree that we had to fell. : Here you can also see the acoustic ceiling. Such a solution makes sense whenever a room becomes large and has many "bare" surfaces. In our case, it goes from the ground floor up to the main purlin, about 7 meters. The ceiling cost somewhere between €12,000 and €15,000 net, I don’t remember exactly and for good reason, I am not looking at the invoices again. Paid and done - what should I still compare today?
