Absolutely right, there are also families who live in even less space. I think it always comes down to making compromises or sacrifices in certain areas. Here, I’m more afraid of regretting for 20 years not building a bit bigger. The more storage space a house has, the more unnecessary things get bought or not thrown away :-) The plan would be to store lawnmowers/garden furniture etc. in a garden shed anyway.

But since the square meter of living space unfortunately costs not €1000 but €2000-2500, it is not €50K but €100K-125K... Plus higher additional maintenance costs.

That's why I'm also a fan of the basement...

The ancillary costs are significantly lower here - things are "nicely" stored centrally and you don't have oversized large rooms on the ground/top floor that you also have to clean/maintain properly and ultimately pay for.

If, like the OP, you really need a lot of space and therefore want to build 180m², I would rather build 140-150m² with a basement. If you don't need a [weiße Wanne] (of course it depends on the building area) then you can manage much more practically and at a similar price level than if you build 180m².

Then you also have all the technical equipment in the basement, you don't get annoyed by the washing machine and the laundry itself, and you have a large tidy storage area with additional design options as a hobby room or similar.

But it's also a personal preference. Not everyone likes to go down to the basement so often and gladly, but rather prefers to have everything on 1 or 2 floors. The OP has to know what he prefers.

I’m completely with you! Unfortunately, my wife doesn’t see it that way yet. Hopefully, the upcoming architect appointment can change that. Furthermore, there are also things that cannot be so easily stored in a storage room because due to their shape or size they don’t fit in a cupboard and therefore inevitably have to be parked somewhere on the floor. Then you build 180m² instead of 140m² with a basement and effectively also only have 140m² of "living space" available. Price-wise, both variants should be roughly in the same range. In my opinion, however, you do have more space available with the variant including a basement. Ultimately, everyone has to decide for themselves!

I am simply of the opinion that the house can never be as "practically tidy" as with a basement... Of course, as storage space the basement is very expensive, no question, but I have everything in the house and don't have to constantly run to a garden shed, a garage, or somewhere else. Nowadays, the basement really belongs to the house - compared to earlier, when people didn't like going into the COLD basement xD
