A staircase with a 24 cm tread is a sham. Go ahead and measure the tread depth of every staircase you find. Is there any with a 24 cm tread? No, right? Ask yourself why! Even with an overhang, you can hardly walk on them. Going up might just be barely possible, but going down from shoe size 36 onwards, you need a safety rope every time. It gets really funny around the corner.

Yeah, someone like me As a student, I once did that at the brickworks around the corner for about 7-8 DM (that was about 35 years ago). Headphones on and piecework! Strips or halves sawed. Hellish noise, but there was no relaxing (piecework).

I have to agree with Katja, at 18.5 cm rise, a 24 cm tread length is already very, very short. According to the general step measurement formula in stair construction, you get 61 cm. On average, it should be 63 cm or even a bit more. Thus, about 26 - 27 cm tread length.

In my case, the stair opening was already predetermined, so I couldn't influence it anymore, and it was pretty tight in terms of measurements. So we really had to "tinker" to get a DIN-compliant staircase in there. This also led to the problem of the rather shallow tread. I already had an accident, just as Katja describes it, stepping too far forward while going down, getting my forefoot over the front edge, and off I went. I did sustain a noticeable injury. So I can only advise giving the topic of a "suitable staircase" sufficient attention.

Our staircase also has 19x23.5 due to space constraints, that's not dramatic now.
