Can report something similar. My dad basically built our first house all by himself – back then without a building permit right in the middle of Dresden – the need was just too great. Real Ossis might also have an idea of how obtaining materials worked – or didn’t work – back then. So someone has to replicate that first!
He still gets annoyed today about a corner of the house that isn’t quite 90°. I actually can’t remember a time when we weren’t building. The house grew with us and we kids were allowed to "join in" in the truest sense.
Youthful recklessness does achieve something. That’s why: always get involved!

This is a great post, Climbee. Thank you for that. Your parents have my utmost respect. Without wanting to sound too pessimistic, I dare to assess that something like this is hardly possible nowadays or that one or the other marriage would break because of it.

I see no contradiction. That would clearly show our degeneration through egocentric prioritization and refusal of commitment.

I find it somewhat unpoetic if I fall on my face with building a house.

I didn't find my contribution poetic either. Falling flat on your face always hurts at first and that is highly likely to happen. That doesn't mean you won't make it.

Scheduling, budget priorities, resource shortages, disagreement, occasionally no cash, helpers dropping out... all of this will repeatedly throw plans overboard and suddenly you are months or years longer on the project than originally thought.

Relationship and attitude are the keys to daring to take on something like this. At least from here, I can't judge these and thus of course cannot attest to infeasibility.
