a few cm, you hopefully don't mean over-plaster?
The 1cm build-up serves to feel the position of the switch in the dark
Feel? The individual buttons surely light up…(with these HighEndSuperDuper products) ;)

The problem is not necessarily that there must be no alternatives or that they are not wanted, but rather that many simply claim something without being able to substantiate it properly. There are indeed quite a few other nice options besides KNX in the home automation world, but unfortunately the discussions regularly drift in a direction that is no longer objective because the knowledge of KNX is simply completely lacking. THAT is unfortunate and is criticized, not the fact that there is something else besides KNX. It’s always the same wrong "arguments" against KNX and that just triggers some people here :)
Imagine, there are also general contractors who have electricians who know very well about it :)I think the main argument against KNX is that you build with a general contractor/developer who has an electrician and/or the electrical work is described in the construction service specification and you cannot remove it cost-neutrally to hire an external system integrator instead...
Imagine there are also GCs who have electricians who know very well about this :)
