Ok I can already see, this really isn’t for me :D I will have to get up from the couch my whole life when it gets dark and I need light...

Yes, lights, roller shutters, sockets... nothing is smart yet, it is basically all just remotely controllable. Smart is something else.

Aside from that, there are also good alternatives to KNX that can be retrofitted. I know I will get some hate for this now, but we handle it the same way. We want to finish building our little house first (we are currently waiting for the building permit) and not spend a lot on extras. I could also invest the same money in a photovoltaic system and get more out of it in the end. However, we currently don't have the money for both, so we have to be content with what we have. Owning a home is already more than enough for us and a dream come true. We are still very young and have plenty of time to tinker with everything over the next decades the way we imagine it. Instead of KNX, there are also plenty of flush-mounted switches that can be controlled via radio, and as soon as Matter is finally fully finished, that will be enough for me. Currently, we live in an apartment that I have made smart enough for us with HomeKit, Zigbee, etc. Why shouldn't that also be enough in the house? The only thing I really plan to add from the start are LAN connections, as they cannot be easily retrofitted. I will handle everything else myself over the years. However, I will also crimp myself and only have the raw cables laid.

Here it becomes clear that you obviously have not dealt enough with the topic. A cargo bike is not an alternative to a truck and never will be. No matter how you try. Uh no, because comfort is an intangible factor and therefore difficult to quantify monetarily. But that’s the kind of discussion that leads nowhere. For that reason, it’s also good if you enjoy the whole thing and want to tinker yourself. Go for it. But they are apples and oranges.

Basically, everyone just has to decide for themselves whether it is worth the money or not. For me, it is definitely not worth the money and I am sure that I can at least set up a comparable solution in terms of comfort for the end users. I am nerdy enough for that and now also deep enough into the subject matter. At the end of the day, I am just building a single-family house and a nice home for my family. That is true even without KNX. To be honest, beyond a certain level, it's all just play, and it only really becomes smart if you truly engage with it.

The truck, however, also costs 100 times as much as the cargo bike and cannot go everywhere the bike can go...

It's just a matter of money. Although, honestly, I see the comparison more between Seat and BMW. A KNX smart home can certainly do more than one via radio, no question. But not by orders of magnitude, because radio is gaining ground...

But it's the same discussion as with LAN/WLAN... our office for 400 employees is WLAN-only...

Everyone as they wish and, above all, what they can afford financially. I believe many homeowners are currently just glad if they can financially handle the additional demands from the construction company and the extra costs of the longer construction time due to material and skilled labor shortages.
