Yes, the airspace is really not great because the corresponding gallery is missing at the top. I would also rather give that to the children. The thing with the air and the fire is still not clear to me. Of course, the air fuels the fire. But we are not talking about an open fireplace here. I can only emphasize that the two steal the show from each other. I would even say they hinder each other. It's not a cozy fireplace because everything evaporates upwards. The chimney bothers me less inside the house than on the roof. I just call it an asparagus.

Because you haven't dealt with the 5 elements and Feng Shui yet. Actually, I'm surprised, you're also such a noodle [emoji2]

Oh, unfortunately I have no insight into Feng Shui. To me, it partly has more religious traits than content-based norms. That’s why I never pursued it further.

But I have to correct myself: air is not one of the 5 elements...

However, that doesn't help the OP either. Spontaneously, I would say that the living room can easily give up half a meter, so that a very deep cabinet stands in the hallway, which can also accommodate a cart or something like that. I just realized that the shortest way from the front door upstairs leads through the living room, which is unacceptable to me: this means there is no retreat space in the living room. During the day, everyone on the sofa has no peace. It's even worse when the teenagers come home in the evening, possibly with their friends. But it's not that easy to fix, except by installing a lockable living room door. But that’s nonsense because then you lock yourself out from the other side as well.

Thinking further: why is the staircase so set in stone here? Wouldn't it make much more sense to rotate it by 90 degrees? That would also create a zoning of parents and children on the upper floor. In my opinion, a better alternative.

I like the floor plan, except for a few minor points already mentioned!

The entrance area could be a bit narrower, in favor of the technical room.

You have to like the staircase in the living room; personally, I have no problem with it.

Actually, I'm not a fan of such mini-air spaces, but here, in connection with the staircase AND the fireplace, I don't find it that bad. Is there a section through the building/staircase?

To make the equipment room in the garage even more optimal to use, I would place the door inside flush with the equipment room outer door. This way, you don’t have to walk through the entire room, which is filled with bicycles, Bobby cars, lawnmowers. Or even better, I would completely remove the partition wall between the garage and the equipment room and work with sliding elements (doors), so you can access the items even more easily from the garage.
