Yes, where do you think I live? I have 8 minutes to work. Quite real. Yes, 30 minutes is the limit. It also depends on how you spend those 30 minutes. Driving 250 on the highway is worse than walking through the forest. My condolences!

With hands-free and voice control? Unlike the various other buttons and settings in the car, everything related to phone calls is done completely hands-free, the eyes always stay on the road...

You also don’t talk to the front passenger in the car? You always drive without children in the car or consistently ignore them? You don’t listen to the radio or change the station there? Surely you don’t set or use the navigation either?

So talking on the phone while driving doesn’t distract me, no. Just as little as conversations with my fellow passengers, should I have any with me. And my children actually do ride in my car, despite the (in this case quite certainly existing) increased distraction.

30 minutes is also my personal pain threshold. But that also varies regionally. When I lived in SH, traffic jams were not an issue at all. I've always moved very close to my workplaces. Later, here in NRW, people were commuting like crazy. Getting up in the morning and knowing you have to queue in the metal avalanche right away - I don't get it. However, people here are often quite stubborn about their place of residence and cannot be moved away from there even with a crowbar.

You want to conclude that distraction is present. Yes, that's true. But that doesn't change the fact that it is dangerous. "Quickly" turning to the child might even be much more so than a phone call, in which you have to be highly focused. But it is and remains a danger, and I don't need to bring more distraction into the car than necessary.

In this context, google the Bavarian Traffic Safety Program 2020 and distraction in road traffic.

It is always a trade-off between added value and risk. The additional risk with a hands-free device is very low for me compared to the huge added value for me. The legislator sees it similarly, which is why it is allowed. Should this change based on new findings, of course, this will be adhered to (as a civil servant, you should definitely be familiar with this...)

If this is not enough for you, you are welcome to completely withdraw from [Strassenverkehr], but you should stop trying to patronize others.

It’s best to just stop talking and listening altogether. Oh, and turn off the radio. Oh now you have to be careful not to fall asleep [emoji85]
